5 Weird Movies You Probably Haven't Seen

By Jared Hammer on September 25, 2017

Exposing your friends to weird movies is extremely satisfying. If you haven’t been getting your daily intake of weird, these movies will help you fight the monotony of normality and expose your mind to new dimensions.

Below, in no particular order, are five of the best weird movies cinema has to offer.

1. Forbidden Zone, 1980

Rated R; 76 minutes

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 88 percent; My rating: 9/10

This is the most bizarre movie you will ever see, and I guarantee it. You’ll witness a drag queen school teacher shoot semi-automatic weapons at her class, meet the boy who lives his life as a chicken, and watch a house digest and defecate humans into the Forbidden Zone.

Don’t expect to actually understand what’s going on in this movie; you just have to roll with the weird. While the storyline might be difficult to understand, this movie gives you endless moments of hilarity and quirk.

Interestingly, the music is also done entirely by The Mystic Knights of Oingo Boingo, which was Danny Elfman’s band before he started composing for huge Hollywood movies. If you also want to see a young Elfman play the devil and sing you a ridiculous song, Forbidden Zone has got you covered.

Since the movie barely makes sense in the first place, this is the perfect movie to watch with friends who habitually talk over movies. You can rest assured that anytime they look back at the screen they’ll be doubling over in confused laughter. You can rent Forbidden Zone on YouTube here.

2. MirrorMask, 2005

Rated PG; 101 minutes

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 54 percent; My rating: 8/10

MirrorMask is a Jim Henson film that has mostly been forgotten. Critics were not kind to this gem, and its reputation never recovered.

I’ve never quite understood why people didn’t get into this movie much, as it’s been a favorite of mine for years. This film is highly imaginative, visually stunning, and the characters are a lot of fun.

The movie does have a basic trope: a child finds her way into a world of her imagination and must go on a quest to save the day. To that end, there’s some Alice in Wonderland and Wizard of Oz vibes from the basics of the storyline, but that’s about all these films have in common, as the story unfolds in a way that is all its own.

If you’re a fan of other Jim Henson films like The Labyrinth or Dark Crystal, then MirrorMask is probably for you. This title is also rentable on YouTube here.

3. Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog, 2008

Rating: Unrated; 42 minutes

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 88 percent (audience score only); My rating: 9/10

This short sci-fi musical is absolutely fantastic. From the genius of Joss Whedon, Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog follows a mad scientist mission to join The Evil League of Evil and get a date with the hot girl from the laundromat. His plans, inevitably, are always thwarted by that arrogant douche bag Captain Hammer. If you like stupid humor delivered with wit, you will like this movie.

Neil Patrick Harris is always entertaining, and his acting and vocals don’t disappoint in this film. The soundtrack is even worth downloading if you’re a comedy musical fan.

Since the film was published straight to the internet, it wasn’t widely distributed or advertised. Still, Dr. Horrible’s has a strong cult following. If you like goofy musicals and/or Neil Patrick Harris, this movie is everything you could ask for. It’s funny, charming, and inventive.

4. Party Monster, 2003

Rated R; 97 minutes

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 29 percent; My rating: 10/10

Party Monster is my favorite movie of all time. Don’t be fooled by the Rotten Tomatoes score on this one; the critic consensus that “The lurid display of camp soon turns tedious” is a bit misguided. The movie is intentionally a “lurid display of camp,” and the joy of seeing Seth Green, Macaulay Culkin, and Marilyn Manson interacting in drag is hardly tedious. It’s magical.

Party Monster follows the true story of the notorious club kids of New York City, a group of people known for outrageous costumes, drug use, and a murder that brought ’90s club culture to its knees. The club kids were fabulous, excessive, and arguably annoying, and the scene birthed stars like Rupaul, James St. James, and Amanda Lapore. You can even still see the real club kids on The Joan Rivers Show here.

Party Monster is highly entertaining, dark, campy, and above all, outrageous. The memoir that inspired the movie is also worth your time, as it’s filled with some serious absurdity that couldn’t make it to film.

You might run into a little trouble looking for this title online. It used to be up on Netflix, but it’s now DVD rent only. There are few options for streaming it online from what I can find, but if you find it, give it a chance. You won’t regret it.

5. I’m a Cyborg, But That’s OK, 2006

Rated: NR; 107 minutes

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 91 percent; My rating: 10/10

This Korean film is a long time favorite of mine. The film follows Young-goon, a woman who ends up in a psych ward because she believes she’s a cyborg. There, she finds herself among the widest array of odd characters and personalities, leading to some of the funniest dialogue I’ve ever heard. You won’t be able to help but quote this movie after you see it. There are so many hysterical one-liners that provide inside jokes built to last.

I wouldn’t call this movie particularly romantic, but it has a lot of romantic comedy elements that are twisted by mental health issues. With questionable mental health in the mix, the romance is awkward and adorable rather than passionate.

I’m a Cyborg but That’s OK has a lot of heart, humor, and randomness. You will get to learn how to fly by rubbing your feet together, uncover the mystery behind who stole Thursday, and witness the glory that is Korean yodeling. Watch I’m a Cyborg But That’s OK on YouTube here.
